Ramadan is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. It is a time when Muslims focus on prayer, charity and thanking the God for his blessings. In addition, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset; and the fast-breaking is a truly sacred moment. In Austin, we get together with our friends of other faiths to celebrate this sacred moment, which is followed by a delicious dinner. Almost every evening, we visit a different place of worship or invite our friends to our place to thank and pray God together.
In 2024, Ramadan is expected to start on March 11th. We break our fasts at sunset, which will be at 7:38pm on the first day, and will extend by about a minute every day. The tentative schedule of our events this year will look like:
6:45pm – 7:00pm: Gathering
7:00pm – 7:15pm: Host community – welcome speech / introduction
7:15pm – 7:40pm: Dialogue Institute – presentation / talk about Ramadan & Fasting
7:40pm – Sunset: Self-service dinner buffet
Sunset – 8:30pm: Dinner
